||All fashions are to an extent ephemeral. The perception of an exponential growth in internet use and the growth of new, virtual business models fuelled a great deal of interest in connectivity. As the dot.com boom turned to bust, interest in the subject evaporated. Despite becoming deeply unfashionable in property circles, the internet has continued to change occupier businesses and, as a consequence, place increasing demands upon the telecommunications infrastructure in buildings. The lack of importance attributed to the subject is born of the mistaken belief that this is a technological issue. In fact it is just one example of the provision of additional services to customers. This paper reviews new research into customer demand for services in buildings that they occupy and looks at trends in the supply of those services.
